Markus Zussak uses colours to present deeper meanings behind the text, he also uses darkness which is a lack of colour but is still of high significance. “She was beaten in the dark, and she had remained there, on a cold, dark kitchen floor. Even papas music was the colour of darkness. Even papas music” In the start of this quote it sets the scene as dark and repeats the motion of darkness throughout the quote. this gives us insight into Markus Zussak’s intentions behind the meaning of darkness as in the quote Liesel says “even papas music was the colour of darkness” contradicts her previous emotions towards his music. Hans music makes her feel safe but in this quote music is not colourful and happy but dark, it is a lack of colour and happiness. Death holds the connotations to darkness which makes us the reader to believe that darkness has some sort of connection to the death. Death was common in Germany during this time and this would hint at the the future of death in the Huberman household as darkness has its presence there. This would lead us to believe that death is darkness as darkness is the unknown. Fear of death can also be linked to the fear of the unknown, therefore darkness is linked to the idea of evil and death.
